If You're Feeling Down
Soft low key vocals, calming indiefolk textures and spine-tingling multi-layered harmonies come together in this poignant invitation to take an outstretched hand.
Written and recorded during lockdown, this mood-enhancing song is a gentle rallying cry to be a source of strength and hope for others as we emerge from a dark winter into Spring. Opening with an ambient drone that remains constant throughout the track, simple finger-picked guitar leads the way to an emerging world of distant drums and floating cinematic piano melodies. The song allows for a few moments of reflective calm in an increasingly overwhelming world.
This is my second release as new Manchester singer-songwriter Test Card Girl. Having started writing songs in 2019, in September 2020 I received Arts Council England funding to write and release 4 singles across 2021 that tell stories hidden inside for many years. My first release premiered on John Kennedy’s Radio X ‘Xposure’ show and I was featured as one of Steve Lamacq’s BBC 6 Music ‘Ones to Watch 2021’ at the start of the year.
‘If You’re Feeling Down’ has been used as the theme tune for the inspirational ‘The Chronically Fit Show’ podcast which features motivational stories of sports stars overcoming the challenges chronic illness. A recent pre-release review in Soundwave Magazine said ‘Burgis’ vocals are soft and radiate a familiarity, even on your first listen, that feels as if she is beckoning the listener for a much-needed hug as she asks “hold out your hand to mine”.
